A Guide to the Seine: Best Riverside Walks, Bridges & Photo Spots
f there's one feature that ties Paris together, it's the Seine. The river runs through the heart of the city, passing landmarks, gardens, historic neighborhoods, museums, and some of Paris's most beautiful bridges. And while you can admire the Seine from a boat, one of the best ways to experience it is simply to walk beside it. Paris has 37 bridges and footbridges crossing the Seine, stretching along roughly 13 kilometres of river within the city. The riverbanks and many of the monuments along them form part of the UNESCO-listed historic landscape of Paris. So where should you walk? And more importantly... Where should you stop for the photo?

1. Pont Neuf to Île de la Cité
Best for: first-time visitors + classic Paris
Start around Pont Neuf, despite its name, one of the oldest bridges in Paris. From here, you can walk along the Seine toward Île de la Cité, passing historic buildings, riverside views, and the famous bouquinistes selling old books and prints along the quays.
📸 Photo stop: Head toward Square du Vert-Galant at the western tip of Île de la Cité. From here, you get a beautiful low-level perspective of the Seine and Pont Neuf.
2. Pont des Arts
Best for: classic Paris photographs
The Pont des Arts connects the Louvre area with the Institut de France on the Left Bank. It's one of the city's most recognizable pedestrian bridges and one of the easiest places to combine a Seine walk with major landmarks. Stand roughly in the middle of the bridge and look along the river. You'll have Parisian architecture stretching in both directions, with the Seine cutting directly through the frame.
📸 Best time: Golden hour. The warm light on the buildings and water makes this one of the easiest “Paris postcard” shots to capture.
3. Île de la Cité & Notre-Dame
Continue toward Île de la Cité, the historic heart of Paris. This is where the Seine walk becomes a history walk. You'll find Notre-Dame, Sainte-Chapelle, the Conciergerie and some of the city's oldest streets within a relatively small area. Join our Notre-Dame free walking tour for a more local experience. The Paris Tourist Office's current Seine walking route specifically highlights Île de la Cité, Notre-Dame, Sainte-Chapelle, Place Dauphine and the riverbanks around Pont Neuf.
📸 Photo stop: Walk along the river toward the eastern end of the island for views of Notre-Dame from across the water. It's a completely different perspective from standing directly in front of the cathedral.

4. The Bouquinistes
Best for: something uniquely Parisian
One of the easiest ways to make your Seine walk feel distinctly Parisian is to follow the bouquinistes. These iconic riverside booksellers have stalls along sections of the Seine, particularly around the historic centre. You'll find old books, posters, prints and vintage souvenirs. It's the kind of detail you might walk straight past if you're focused only on monuments. And that's exactly why you shouldn't.
📸 Photo tip: Photograph the green book boxes with the Seine and historic buildings behind them.

5. Pont Alexandre III
Best for: dramatic architecture + Eiffel Tower views
If you want one bridge that feels completely over the top, in the best possible way, make it Pont Alexandre III. Built for the 1900 Universal Exhibition, the bridge is decorated with sculptures, gilded details and enormous pylons topped by winged horses. It connects the Invalides area with the Grand Palais and Petit Palais. And the views aren't bad either. From the bridge, you can see the Eiffel Tower, Invalides and the Seine in one direction.
📸 Photo stop: Stand toward the centre of the bridge and frame the Eiffel Tower through the ornate details. For an even wider shot, head down to the riverside.
6. The Eiffel Tower From the Seine
You don't always need to go up the Eiffel Tower to get an amazing Eiffel Tower photograph. Some of the best perspectives come from across the Seine. The riverbanks around the Eiffel Tower offer multiple viewpoints, and the Paris Tourist Office specifically highlights the combination of the river, gardens, bridges and observation points in this area.
Try this: Walk between the Eiffel Tower and Pont d'Iéna, then continue along the river. The further you move, the more the perspective changes.

7. Pont de Bir-Hakeim
Best for: architecture + cinematic photos For something slightly different, head toward Pont de Bir-Hakeim. Its distinctive structure creates strong lines and layers, making it popular with photographers and filmmakers. It's also an excellent place to combine a Seine walk with Eiffel Tower views.
📸 Photo tip: Use the bridge's columns and arches to frame the Eiffel Tower in the distance. The result feels much more cinematic than the standard Eiffel Tower selfie.
